More than 40% of the adult population in the United States has obesity, and this percentage is higher in patients with psychiatric disorders. Unfortunately, clinicians only spend on average 10 hours of their medical education to study this issue. While the etiology of weight gain is hard to tease out and the time a clinician can spend understanding the reasons for a patient’s weight gain is limited, it is essential in order to properly address the issue, especially when serious psychiatric disorders are involved. This series of audio podcasts aims at broadly presenting the etiology of obesity, with a focus on the relationship between psychiatric disorders and weight gain as well as presenting the latest management approaches for this vulnerable patient population.
