Target Audience and Goal Statement

This activity is intended for primary care physicians, nurse practitioners, pediatricians, obstetrician/gynecologists, and hematologists.

The goals of this activity are for learners to be better able to recognize clinical signs of α-thalassemia, implement preconception counseling, and apply approaches to reducing the risk of long-term complications.

Upon completion of this activity, participants will:

  • Have increased knowledge regarding the
    • Potential complications associated with α-thalassemia
  • Have greater competence related to
    • Differential diagnosis of α-thalassemia 
    • Determining counseling needs for patients with α-thalassemia around pregnancy
