Target Audience and Goal Statement

This activity is intended for neurologists, primary care physicians, geriatricians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other healthcare professionals involved in the recognition and management of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD).

The goal of this activity is for learners to be better able to effectively utilize tools designed to result in the timely diagnosis of cognitive impairment.

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Plan cognitive impairment assessment as part of the Medicare Annual Wellness Visit
  • Apply appropriate assessment tools and protocols for timely identification of patients with early AD
  • Differentiate AD from other causes of cognitive impairment
  • Apply appropriate billing codes for people with cognitive impairment

Case Introduction

Lily, a 72-year-old woman, presents at your practice because she feels like she has become more forgetful lately and her husband, Alexander, who has accompanied her today, is becoming particularly concerned. When you question Lily about specific instances where she noticed her forgetfulness, she tells you that she sometimes forgets to buy certain items at the grocery store. Alexander adds that she once got lost coming back from the shopping center when a road was closed for construction. However, further questioning reveals that Lily is able to perform most of her activities of daily living (ADLs) without difficulty.
