Target Audience and Goal Statement

This activity is intended for gastroenterologists, primary care physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants.

The goal of this activity is that learners will be better able to fully understand the impact of UC on their patients' lives, particularly the extensive impact of bowel urgency. In addition, learners will gain competence on how to assess patients regarding the prevalence and impact of urgency on patient quality of life (QOL), and how to incorporate bowel urgency into an agreed treatment plan.

Upon completion of this activity, participants will:

  • Have increased knowledge regarding the
    • Patient reluctance to discuss bowel urgency, which is a key bothersome symptom in moderate to severe UC that significantly impacts patient QOL
  • Have greater competence related to
    • Implementing shared decision-making to develop an appropriate treatment plan
  • Demonstrate greater confidence in their ability to
    • Communicate with patients regarding the burden of UC symptoms
