Target Audience and Goal Statement

This activity is intended for radiologists, anesthesiologists, orthopedists and orthopedic surgeons, surgeons, physiatrists, neurologists, pediatricians, and primary care physicians.

The goal of this activity is that learners will be better able to be aware of orthopedic complications of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), the impact of skeletal complications, and the role of the medical team in monitoring bone health, scoliosis, and complex spine rehabilitation needs.

Upon completion of this activity, participants will:

  • Have increased knowledge regarding the
    • Skeletal abnormalities seen in patients with SMA
    • Impact of skeletal abnormalities in SMA on patient quality of life (QOL)
  • Have greater competence related to
    • The selection and use of medications for the management of SMA in patients with skeletal complications
