Target Audience and Goal Statement

This activity is intended for primary care clinicians, psychiatrists, neurologists, geriatricians, nurse practitioners, and nurses.

The goal of this activity is to provide clinicians with tools to assess driving safety and methods to discuss driving retirement in medically impaired drivers.

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

Discuss current interventions available to older adults that aim to improve driving behavior or reduce motor vehicle crash risk
Screen for functional and medical impairments that identify a potentially unsafe medically impaired driver
Identify the types of health professionals who may assist in assessing fitness to drive
Summarize communication, ethical, and legal issues surrounding the recommendation of driving retirement
Screen for functional and medical impairments that identify a potentially unsafe medically impaired driver
