Recent improvements of surgical techniques and advances in instrumentation have contributed to improved visual outcomes with various corneal procedures. This has led to greater prominence of lamellar keratoplasty surgery in recent years, with studies showing visual outcomes matching those of PKP and the advantage of improved graft survival and less long-term graft failures. It is anticipated that, in the coming years, there will be continual improvements of lamellar keratoplasty and newer refractive surgery techniques, including the widespread use of FS lasers, which can now be programmed to perform lamellar corneal surgery, both anterior and posterior. Current research such as tissue-engineered cornea[245] is likely to be the next new frontier in the field of corneal surgery.
