Target Audience and Goal Statement

This activity is intended for physicians and other clinicians who qualify as eligible professionals for incentive payments from the federal government for implementation and adoption of a certified electronic health record (EHR).

The goal of this activity is to promote awareness of and participation in the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act incentive program for implementation, adoption, and demonstration of meaningful use of EHRs.

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Assess their current knowledge of the HITECH Act and meaningful use, and identify opportunities for learning
  2. Assess their current knowledge of EHR benefits and identify opportunities for learning
  3. Identify common barriers to successful EHR implementation

Introduction

The goals of continuing medical education (CME)/nurse continuing education (CE) and professional development are to acquire and retain knowledge that will enhance clinical practice and improve patient outcomes.

The following self-assessment is offered for CME/CE credit and is designed to test your current knowledge and skills related to a new incentive program that supports the effective use of electronic health records (EHRs).

Because the questions in this activity are designed for self-assessment, you will not be penalized for incorrect answer choices. In fact, many of the questions do not have a right or wrong answer.

This self-assessment is part of a large educational curriculum on EHRs. Data from this survey will help shape the content of the other activities in the curriculum to best meet the educational and clinical performance gaps identified.
