Target Audience and Goal Statement

This activity is intended for clinicians who routinely administer influenza vaccines and who evaluate and treat patients experiencing adverse events after influenza immunization, including family medicine and internal medicine physicians, pediatricians, obstetricians/gynecologists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and nurses.

The intended goals of this program are to educate clinicians on the following topics:

  • The safety profiles of licensed influenza vaccines
  • The safe administration of influenza vaccines and screening for contraindications and precautions
  • The resources available for communicating benefits and risks of influenza vaccination
  • The accurate and timely reporting of any adverse events to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS)

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Apply the updated Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommendations for influenza immunization
  2. Separate fact from fiction about vaccine safety
  3. Demonstrate appropriate use of the VAERS
