Target Audience and Goal Statement

This activity is intended for physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists and other healthcare providers caring for patients with infections in the emergency department.

The goal of this activity is to define "state-of-the-art" treatment protocols and clinical strategies for the management of patients with infections and to support quality clinical practice of healthcare professionals involved in their care.

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss the role of the EM clinician in addressing the emergence of antibiotic resistance and initiating antibiotic therapy
  2. Review evidence regarding prescribing patterns and antibiotic resistance profiles in the ED
  3. Highlight the importance of effective resistance surveillance protocols in the ED
  4. Discuss new antibiotic treatment options and their appropriate administration in drug resistant infection
