The role of the oncology pharmacist is to institute safeguards to protect patient safety, ensure accuracy and clinical appropriateness, and provide safe handling of cancer medications. As part of their multidisciplinary role, pharmacists collaborate with other members of the cancer care team to assess patients and develop a therapy plan based on the patient's condition, physiologic changes, and reactions to previous therapy, with the goal of ensuring coordination and optimization of the patient's total care. Pharmacists also play a key role in providing appropriate drug-related education for both patients and colleagues. This initiative between Medscape Education Oncology and HOPA is designed for pharmacists who specialize in hematology/oncology as well as those who practice in a broader setting and care for patients with cancer less frequently.
