Vascular disease comprises a broad group of clinical conditions ranging from the chronic (varicose veins, atherosclerotic vascular disease) to the acute and life-threatening (deep vein thrombosis syndrome, abdominal aorta aneurysm). The increasing prevalence of peripheral artery disease and carotid artery disease may be related to a rise in the prevalence of diabetes, just as rising rates of obesity are linked to the increased incidence of varicose veins. Varicose vein surgery may be necessary for patients with venous insufficiency who do not respond to less invasive varicose vein treatment.
