About Substance Abuse and Addiction

Substance abuse and addiction are characterized by a strong physiologic and emotional dependence on a particular agent. The causes of substance abuse are complex and involve genetic, neurobiological, and psychosocial factors. The early signs of substance abuse and drug addiction may not be apparent, but substance abuse testing can identify the use of illicit agents. Treatment frequently involves substance abuse counseling, but a more effective intervention is substance abuse prevention.
