Renal cell carcinoma is a heterogeneous group of sporadic or hereditary cancers that develop from kidney cells. Kidney cancer symptoms may include hematuria, back pain, and weight loss. Localized renal cell carcinoma is highly curable, and standard kidney cancer treatment is partial or radical nephrectomy. For those with metastatic renal cell carcinoma, the prognosis is poor, although newer, targeted agents show promise of extending survival.
