Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic, nonspecific inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. The major inflammatory bowel disorders are Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. IBD symptoms vary with disease but include abdominal pain, bleeding, diarrhea, and weight loss. Chronic inflammatory bowel disease treatment previously focused on suppression of the inflammatory process, but biologic agents that target the underlying processes of inflammation have begun a new era in IBD treatment.
