Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the name of 100 viruses, 30 of which are sexually transmitted. HPV vaccines target HPV types 16 and 18, which cause 70% of cervical cancer cases and are sometimes thought of as cervical cancer vaccines. The strains of HPV known to cause cervical cancer do not produce HPV symptoms. The only cervical cancer symptoms are precancerous changes in the cervix, which can be detected at regular pelvic examinations.
