Glaucoma -- a heterogeneous group of disorders marked by damage to the optic nerve -- is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide. Primary open-angle glaucoma, which is usually detected via elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), is the most common diagnosis, while angle-closure glaucoma can cause the most sudden and devastating vision loss. Early diagnosis is the key to successful management of glaucoma. Treatment strategies generally entail IOP-lowering drops, but may include trabeculectomy or other surgery as well as newer, neuroprotective approaches.
