Diabetes mellitus type 2 (diabetes mellitus 2 or diabetes 2) is epidemic, as evidenced by worsening diabetes statistics and increasing diagnosis of adult-onset diabetes. Other types of diabetes, including gestational diabetes and insulin-dependent diabetes, are also on the rise. The symptoms of diabetes 2 depend on the degree of glycemic control and the patient's response to a diabetic diet, exercise, and diabetes medication. Clinicians should maintain a high index of suspicion in patients at risk for diabetes mellitus and be alert for the warning signs of diabetes.
