Medscape Education Diabetes & Endocrinology, November 2020
Bone and mineral disorders can be congenital or acquired. They can be associated with endocrine disorders (eg, primary hyperparathyroidism), chronic kidney disease (renal osteodystrophy), nutritional deficiencies (osteoporosis, metabolic bone disease), or metabolic disorders (eg, disorders of vitamin D metabolism). Bone mineral density testing is the primary diagnostic test for mineral and bone disorders. Greater understanding of the cellular and molecular biology of bone and mineral disorders has led to advances in treatment for these diseases in recent years.
