Anxiety disorders are debilitating and often chronic conditions characterized by pathologic degrees of anxiety, fear, or phobia collectively affecting 40 million American adults over the age of 18 each year. Despite the high prevalance, anxiety-related conditions are under-recognized and undertreated. Anxiety is thought to result from a confluence of factors including genetic susceptibility, neurobiological influences, and environmental stressors and results in significant morbidity/mortality and impaired quality of life. Both medications and psychosocial interventions can be beneficial in treating anxiety disorders and improving patient outcomes.
