About Adult Immunization

  • Immunization is the introduction of killed or attenuated microorganisms, antigens derived from them, or synthetic constructs, administered for the prevention, amelioration, or treatment of infectious and other diseases. Vaccines can be administered orally, nasally, or via injection. Immunization is widely regarded as one of the most important developments in public health in modern medicine: it has been responsible for virtually eliminating some infectious diseases and can limit the mortality and morbidity associated with others. However, especially for adults, failure to optimally immunize individuals has contributed to a continuing toll in terms of financial, personal and public health from vaccine-preventable diseases.
