CME Activities

  • Iodinated Contrast Media Linked With Thyroid Dysfunction Risk CME Among patients receiving iodinated contrast media for contrast-enhanced computed tomography, iodinated contrast media exposure was linked with an increased risk for incident hyperthyroidism.
  • Thyroid Physiology and Autoimmunity in Pregnancy and After Delivery CME Thyroid autoimmunity characteristically gets better to some extent during pregnancy and gets worse after delivery.
  • Harmful Effects of Hypothyroidism in Pregnancy Prompt New Guidelines CME/CE The American Thyroid Association has issued guidelines on the diagnosis and management of thyroid disease during pregnancy, indicating harmful effects of hypothyroidism on maternal and fetal health.
  • Antithyroid Drug-induced Fetal Goitrous Hypothyroidism How can physicians prevent and treat fetal hypothyroidism caused by antithyroid drug treatment in the mother? The current review addresses this issue.
  • Thyroid Drug Linked to Fracture Risk in Older Adults Among adults 70 years and older, current thyroid treatment was associated with significantly increased fracture risk, with a strong dose-response relationship.
  • ATA Proposes Guidelines for 131I Radiation Precautions The American Thyroid Association has proposed guidelines for prevention of radiation exposure from radioiodine therapy to others and a new statement on central neck dissection for thyroid cancer.
  • Tachycardia in a 61-Year-Old Woman A 61-year-old woman presents with tachycardia, a nontender goiter, and weight loss. She has a medical history of an unspecified thyroid problem. What is the diagnosis?
  • Graves Disease: A Review CME/CE
  • Strategies for the Management of Symptomatic Atrial Fibrillation Dr. Ruskin reviews 2 cases: a 25-year-old man in atrial fibrillation with a rapid ventricular response, and a 62-year-old man with episodes of spontaneously-resolving paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.
  • Lethargy and Mental Status Changes in a 94-Year-Old Man CME An elderly man is presented to the ED with altered mental status. He was recently hospitalized for several conditions, including hypothyroidism and a myocardial infarction. What is the diagnosis?
  • Improving Care for Patients With Noonan Syndrome: Guidelines for Pediatricians Review the most current information on the manifestations, underlying mutations, and management of patients with Noonan syndrome.
  • Targeted Therapies for Cancer: Recognizing the Cardiovascular Risks Several cancer therapies have been associated with cardiotoxicity. What should you anticipate with the targeted therapies?
  • Thyroid Eye Disease: Ocular Treatment Fifty percent of patients with Graves' disease develop clinically apparent TED, and pathological changes of TED are detected in two thirds of patients without symptoms.
  • FDA Adds Boxed Warning to Propylthiouracil The new warning includes a postmarketing data review of cases of severe liver injury and acute liver failure, some fatal, as well as information on whether to use the drug in pregnancy.
  • Hyperthyroidism Increases Stroke Risk in Young Adults Hyperthyroidism along with lifestyle habits should be considered stroke risk factors, researchers say.
  • Perspectives on the 4th World Symposium on Pulmonary Hypertension   Join Dr. Frantz as he reviews and provides his expert perspectives on the Dana Point classification and treatment guidelines for PAH.
  • Effects of Amiodarone Therapy on Thyroid Function It may be challenging to distinguish the thyroid effects of amiodarone because these may present as a change in frequency or severity of arrhythmias for which the drug was prescribed.
  • Tachycardia in a 61-Year-Old Woman CME/CE A 61-year-old woman presents with tachycardia, a nontender goiter, and weight loss. She has a past medical history of an unspecified thyroid problem. What is causing this patient's tachycardia?
  • A Patient With Stress-Related Onset and Exacerbations of Graves Disease An 18-year-old, nonsmoking woman presented to her general practitioner with a 1-week history of weakness, fatigue, palpitations, nervousness, tremors, insomnia, heat intolerance, and enlargement of a euthyroid goiter that had been detected 2 years earlier.
  • Endocrine Emergencies Endocrine emergencies such as thyroid storm, myxedema coma, DKA, and adrenal crisis are relatively uncommon and frequently overlooked. This concise review steps through the description, incidence, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and treatment of each of these serious conditions.

About Thyroid Disease

  • Thyroid disease is one of the most common endocrine disorders. Disorders of thyroid function include hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. Thyroid symptoms vary depending on the degree of under- or overproduction of thyroid hormones. Hypothyroidism symptoms (dry, brittle hair; fatigue; cold intolerance) can develop slowly over months or years. Symptoms of hyperthyroidism (increased pulse, irregular rhythm, sweating, weight loss) are generally more overt.
