About IBS and Chronic Constipation

  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and chronic constipation are disorders of recurrent colonic symptoms and neither has a clear-cut etiology. IBS is a common disorder of the intestines in which altered motility, abnormal visceral sensation, and psychosocial factors produce characteristic IBS symptoms, such as abdominal pain, bloating, and mucus in feces. Because IBS can cause chronic constipation, it is difficult for clinicians to distinguish between these 2 presentations.
