Cardiomyopathy is a disease of the heart muscle that is classified according to pathophysiologic mechanism or etiology: viral cardiomyopathy; infiltrative cardiomyopathy; postpartum cardiomyopathy; obstructive cardiomyopathy; and when the cause is unknown, primary cardiomyopathy or idiopathic cardiomyopathy. Cardiomyopathy symptoms vary depending on underlying pathology, but a common feature is heart failure. The aim of cardiomyopathy management involves treating the underlying cause of cardiomyopathy as well as the symptoms.
